San Vicente October 21, 2017

September 24, 2017 by BigEd

San Vicente Reservoir reopened for fishing and boating on September 22nd, 2016 after being closed for more than 8 years while it underwent a massive project to raise the height of the dam by 117 vertical feet – the tallest dam raise in United States history. San Vicente is located 25 miles northeast of San Diego in the rural foothills of Lakeside. (13600 Moreno Ave. Lakeside, CA 92040).

View the San Vicente Lake Map

San Vicente Reservoir is by far the largest reservoir in San Diego County in terms of water volume with a total capacity of 249,358 acre feet, more than twice that of the 2nd largest reservoir, El Capitan. The original dam at San Vicente Reservoir was completed in 1943, creating a reservoir with 1,069 surface acres and 14 miles of shoreline with a maximum depth of 190 feet. In 2009, the San Diego County Water Authority began a project to raise the dam an additional 117 feet, allowing the lake to store an additional 152,000 acre feet of water providing another 500 surface acres. That project was completed in 2012, and the reservoir reopened on September 22nd, 2016 after a new marina and dock facilities were added. San Vicente Reservoir is owned and operated by the city of San Diego. Concession services, including the rental boat fleet is operated by Rocky Mountain Recreation.

Skinner July 22, 2017

June 11, 2017 by BigEd

Saturday July 22, 2017 Lake Skinner. Nestled in the rolling hills of Winchester, CA, beautiful Lake Skinner Recreational Area offers visitors expansive natural vistas and invigorating recreational opportunities, including camping, picnicking, hiking, horseback riding, sailing, and fishing. This popular regional park is located just a few short miles east of the Temecula Wineries, close to the bustling communities of Murrieta and Menifee, and within easy access of Interstates 15 and 215. Created in 1973, Lake Skinner has 1400 surface acres of water and is operated by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. Supplied by the Colorado River through the Colorado River Aqueduct and the State Water Project, the lake feeds the Robert A. Skinner filtration plant and, in turn, supplies water to many residents of Southern California. While the park is popular for all its recreational activities, fishing is undoubtedly one of its biggest attractions. Lake Skinner is home to Striped Bass, Largemouth Bass, Carp, and Bluegill year round. The District also stocks Catfish in the summer and Trout in the winter, keeping the fishing active all year long.

El Capitan June 10, 2017

May 29, 2017 by BigEd

Saturday June 10, 2017 will be the third stop for the 2017 Basscontender season.  El Capitan, or “El Cap” as it is known to locals is one of the premier bass fishing lakes in San Diego County. It is located in the rural hills of Lakeside about 30 miles east of downtown San Diego. In addition to the outstanding bass fishery, El Capitan is also one of Southern California’s best crappie lakes. Catfish (both blues and channels), bluegill, carp and green sunfish are also present and abundant at the lake. At 1,562 surface acres (at full pool) it is one of the area’s largest reservoirs, and appears as such because of how long it is. El Capitan bears the brunt of the bass tournament activity in San Diego County along with San Vicente lake. El Capitan Reservoir was created in 1934 as the result of building a dam along the San Diego River there.

There is a picnic area with tables and barbecues situated above the launch ramp with an elevated and scenic view of the lake. There is a concession available at the lake, operated by an independent third party concessionaire. Rental boats are available on days the concession is open. For the concession schedule, visit rockymountainrec.com/lakes/lake-elcapitan.htm.

elcapitanEl Capitan is one of the few reservoirs big enough to allow water contact activities. Water skiing, wake boarding, jetskiing, and other boating activities are permitted on limited days, and depending on the day of the week and the time of the year, those days can overlap with fishing days. El Capitan maintains two launch ramps, one for high water and one for low or medium pools. El Cap also allows float tubes, canoes, and kayaks, but those are required to pay a fee as well. El Capitan Reservoir is open year-round on a limited basis, and the schedule changes seasonally. The lake is operated by the city of San Diego, so you can visit their “What’s New” page for current operating schedule, or keep an eye on our latest El Capitan Reservoir fish reports for the latest schedule information and fishing conditions.

See you on the water: Big Ed!
