California Bass Contenders Results Lake Silverwood SRA May 11th, 2013
“PUTTING THE WOOD TO THEM”
On Saturday May 11, 2013 The California Bass Contenders tangled for the top spot in the tournament at Lake Silverwood State Recreation Area. It was a day just like any other day, only this day would be different because it was the “Open House” for the first Bass Contender team Event in recent history. Twenty six Bass Contenders consisting of thirteen teams met at the turn out at 4:30am for the morning briefing. It was brief, but informative, as Tournament Director Big Ed Cazares handed out the variance weigh slips and called the the starting rotation of the thirteen boat playing field in order from top to bottom. The driving force behind the team tournament format is the new regulations from the California Department Of Wildlife that is changing regarding Bass Fishing Tournaments so we as a club are rolling with those changes. The DFW has determined that the mortality rate of live caught tournament black bass in a fishing contest is between 15%-25% under perfect conditions. Those rates increase sharply when more fish are contained in a live well (two limits) and warm water conditions effecting Oxygen, C.O. and D.O. to name a few. Regardless of the fish swimming off in apparent good condition this mortality rate has been proven to occur in the following days after release. Much of it has to do with slime coats and infections.
It was perfect conditions as we launched under dark light with the sky above just turning from black to blue. We entered from the private construction entrance where the Ranger and Staff at Silverwood SRA were extremely helpful and courteous making sure we launched as early as possible before the general public. There was also another bass club Perris Valley Bassmasters who were gentlemen by allowing us Bass Contenders to enter and not crowd us as we launched. They actually waited for us to blast off so not to cause us a cluster frick which is saying a lot to their integrity and sportsmanship.
To nobody’s surprise we offer a Bass Contenders congratulations to the first place team lead by your Bass Contender President Bill Layne and his partner returning to the ranks of the Bass Contender Elites Gil Bowman. Together Bill and Gil combined for 14.87lbs with a kicker fish of 5.06lbs putting “The Wood” to the rest of the competition and also winning Big Boat honors, Big Fish honors not to mention the two best dressed anglers of the day fishing from team Champion.

At today’s contest we were blessed with the return by long time veteran angler and former Bass Contender brother Gil Bowman who paired up with Bill “The Come Back Kid” Layne. Welcome home Gil, we hope you stick around and continue to hang out with us making us a better group with your presence. Also joining us for the first time was angler Tony Argueta who fished with veteran angler and Basscontender VP Mark Bowman. Welcome Tony we hope you enjoyed fishing your first ever tournament and fishing from the deck of a Ranger, the second best made boat in the industry. Maybe next tournament you can fish out of a Champion 🙂
At the California Bass Contenders we just seem to be having fun events all the time. Thank you to California Snack Foods and angler Danny Caldwell for once again providing snacks at the weigh-in for all to enjoy. Everybody is bagging limits at our recent events and the grass just feels greener on this side of the fence. What a great time for us to keep hitting the ground running as we head into our next event in June at El Capitan reservoir down south in the land of south San Diego County. It just keeps on getting better.
